ASIO vs Windows Audio Shootout!

No, the latency does.
Play some e-drums and sing.
You’d never consider Windows Audio again.

Fortunately for me that is a non-issue!

That’s okay, still moving to Mac…

OK Gang,

Thank you all for playing.

In this stream @olive mentioned that he can also get great results with Windows Audio.

Definitely.

I really can’t tell much difference soundwise between my onboard sound of my laptop, and my beloved RME Babyface II. Yes, the phone out of the Babyface has more punch than the on-board sound when connected to my HD650 Sennheiser phones. But nothing I would perceive live.

Latency and internal added latency and latency jitter not reported in the driver setting dialogue is the real difference.

With Win Audio I can play full CPU load at 144 samples buffer@48kHz. Reported latency is 3,0 ms, but it feels much more sluggish to play live. Well, acceptable as a fall-back if my RME would fail (unlikely, or I forgot it at home more likely …)

With RME ASIO and Babyface I can play 96 samples [email protected]. Reported latency is 2.2ms, but it feel way more tighter to play live.

I definitely can tell this difference, 20+ years experience with different interfaces, laptops and hosts on stage, and done some research on latency with electronic lab test gear once upon a time.
