CPU Usage Changing

My GP notebook, Windows 10, has been fully configured to be a “GP computer only” following the guidelines and tutorials here for optimization… I don’t do anything else with it and it’s about as clean as it can be.

Now I do have some pretty heavy duty rack spaces that can push it up to 70 or 80% CPU usage at times. I have one Rackspace in particular, although I have seen this to a lesser degree with others, where the CPU usage can vary fairly significantly from time to time that I use it. Last night for instance, when we were rehearsing the song it was hitting 100% and dropping out all over the place with me. After rehearsal I went back to that same Rackspace and played all the way through it and it never got above about 80% where it plays fine actually. There is nothing else going on that I can tell at the moment with the computer.

What factors can make it change from time to time that I open and play that rackspace? The 80% I can live with, but when suddenly it decides it wants to go to 100 and drops out all over the place, obviously it is unusable.

I am not computer guru, but I’ll pipe up anyway FWIW…

I was going to suggest you look at the Windows Task Manager when the CPU is high (and compared to when it is manageable). But, if this is the CPU in GP, then I think that is only dealing with GP’s use of CPU.

Can you see anything you are doing differently each time that might affect CPU? Like holding the sustain pedal down longer so more notes are continuously triggered (that could quickly run up CPU).

  1. Are you using patch persist? That would cause two rackspaces to run concurrently temporarily until you release all held notes and sustain pedal

  2. Sanity check - is it possible that your computer is not up to the task of running those heavy duty rackspaces?

  1. How is your RAM usage? Is it possible that your gigfile when loaded is trying to use more RAM than is physically available thereby causing swapping?

You weren’t running on battery power by accident during rehearsal?

No … in fact my equipment doesn’t move as we rehearse at my place.

Just thought, but had you been using other rackspaces/songs before getting to the one that’s causing this issue?
Ive found on my Mac that as the night goes on my gig file increases quite a bit, and it’s prone to the odd drop out as the RAM is getting full and im getting more and more disk swapping. I do use Predictive loading to keep it down, but I find with rehearsals im jumping all over the place.
If you went straight to the offending one the next day this would rule out the ram build up.

Not that i really know what im talking about, but this has been my experience.
