Anyone ever have any issues with clipping on the inputs of Gig Performer. I had an issue with a few channels while mixing a live band a few nights ago. Im running into a Midas M32c. All my input gains on the board were at optimal levels but input meters in Gig Performer were clipping/distorting. The output meter levels on Gig Performer looked fine. Im also running the M32 edit software to control the mixer. I do find sometimes there are little glitches in that software
Did you also hear distortion or was it just the display?
I could hear it as well. Tom 1, overhead, bass guitar and lead vocal. Couldn’t understand where it was coming from because loke i said, all my input gains on the board were good. When i opened up the input block in wiring diagram, ot showed those channels spiking
Did you try attenuating your inputs?
You’re talking about opening up the input block that looks like this?
If those are set at 0db then you should be hearing what the mixer is sending. But I have no experience with Midas interfaces.
I did not but im going to try that and see what it does. Ive never had this issue before and like i said, seems when i load up a scene in m32 edit, once in awhile there is a glitch and i have to mess with the channel that is having the issue and it wakes the channel up.
Yes, they are clipping in that input block but on the mixer gain, im at -18
Just for curiosity: you are using the DN32-USB as USB interface within the M32C?
We are talking Analog In (Stagebox)->AES50->M32C->USB-> Gig Performer?
Where’s your send point from M32c → USB patched? Pre/Post EQ?
What is optimal level?
Yes and yes. Im using the DL32 stagebox. Maybe you have some knowledge with this setup? Here are some pictures of my routing. Maybe i have had it connected wrong this whole time? One thing i noticed is on the inputs tab, it has to be in play mode in order for me to hear or patch through the plugins in gig performer. When the mixer is normally used, its in record mode.
Also, im using the earthworks drum mics on my drums. They are super hot condenser mics. Say like on the overheads, i have the input gain all the way down and i have little room before clipping. I think they are hitting around -30 even with no gain. Ive been searching for a way to attenuate these channels in the M32. Not sure if thats possible. But, that still does not explain why the vocal mic and bass guitar were still clipping.
And im not sure what you mean by where im sending from, pre or post eq etc. Are there different options to send from? I just know this is always the way ive been able to get it to work and like i said, maybe im going about it the wrong way lol
Hm, your routing looks reasonable. AES50 directly to Card should be perfect.
Sorry about the pre/post send points comment. On some other consoles you could also select if you want to record on USB with EQ/dynamics, I think this is done different on the M32(c).
Yeah, im just wondering why i have in play mode in order to run the software through the system.
I do think i may have figured out my problem. I think it was in the preamp section on the board. I didn’t realize i was adjusting the local preamps when it should have been on the stagebox preamps. The little things you don’t realize your doing lol. I thought the stagebox preamps would have been set at zero from the factory but they were all over the place. They were set very high on the channels that were clipping. I never even adjusting those before so not sure why they were all different
So I take it the problem with clipping in GP is now solved?
I have yet to test it in a live environment but i do believe the preamps were the issue. On the last picture, channel 19 and 20 were the lead vocal, 21 was a backup vocal for drummer so it wasnt seeing a ton of use and his voice didnt project as much even though preamp was higher. The bass guitar was definitley the worst and you can see it at +40.5 db on channel 22. Not sure how these got adjusted like that. I would assume from the factory they would have been set to the same levels
In the X32, X18 world this is called tap points. These indeed let you choose where in the signal chain you want to grab the signal. In this case obviously directly after the preamps.
Im sure its probably the same on the m32. Where do you access these tap points though? Also when just using the mixer in general, it has to be on record mode but in order to hear the signal with the plugins, it has to be set to play mode. Im still not sure if i have this set up in the best way. I also tried gig performer on my friend’s yamaha mixer but could not figure out how to access the signal from gig performer and the plugins on that mixer.
