I am about to buy a new Mac Mini M4 (32GB RAM) to replace my current Macbook Pro (intel i7).
MI have a full TimeMachine backup of my current Mackbook and, according to the store where I will buy the Mac Mini, they can transfer everything to my new machine.
Question nº 1: Using my backup in the new machine will transfer really everything (programs, plugins, hard drive content and so on)?
Question nº 2: As I am mooving to an Apple processor (M4 processor) and my current Mac has an intel processor, will there be any sort of incompatibility?
I need your advise/opinios prior to make this moove.
Yes there will be some incompatibility from intel to apple silicon. There will be different latest versions that work. Also there will be some that won’t work on the silicon chip.
I would save everything like custom presets, gig files, rackspaces, scripts, etc.
then install your plugins again on the new Mac.
That’s what I would do.
Be careful - some stuff does not get migrated - particularly license activations for some plugins.
Make sure you’re not trying to use any Intel AU plugins. The macOS will automatically use Rosetta for these and we do not support that mix because we have no control over how Rosetta behaves and it’s not 100% perfect. Always use Apple Silicon native versions or Universal versions (those contain both Intel and Native in a single package) and preferably use VST/VST3 versions, they tend to be more stable (better tested by developers)
Install Gig Performer from the installer, don’t depend on that Time Machine Restore. When you run it the first time, hold shift key down to make sure you start with an empty gigfile. Then open the plugin manager, delete everything in the list and do a complete rescan.
I’ve been using Korg Triton Extreme from Korg Collection 4 and Kontakt 6 on native Apple Silicon in GP for over 2 years with no plugin issues. Nexus 5 system requirements for MacOS has the bullet point * Apple Silicon M1 (native) or Intel 2.0 GHz processor. It looks like you should be good to go with your bread and butter plugins.
I just purchased a Mac Mini M4 pro and wanted to copy everything from my gigging MacBook over to it.
I used Migration Assistant to transfer and all I had to do was to reauthorize a few of my VST collections.
All of my songs and Gig files were there and ready to rock.
